Peter Pants pretty much requires you to to play some variant of mages if you want to have any chance of being able to defeat lvl 6 boards at the end game. Merlin and Potion Master will scale a board even faster since they give buffs when casting spells. You do not need a specific hero to play this build, but there are some obvious hero synergies. It Heavily synergizes with The Storm King and Monster Book but is not a treasure you should take before you’re confident that your board has scaled enough. Mirror Mirror is difficult to get but very strong in your final endgame build. Mimic doubling your other treasure helps make Deck of Many Things more viable, but it is far more powerful with Merlin’s Hat, Forking Rod and Wand of Weirding. But one spell a turn is not not nearly enough to scale your board, something you learn pretty quickly if you try to play mages with Loki.

Deck of Many Things gives you a free spell each turn which is obviously good for scaling. If I’m missing two I usually wouldn’t go into Mages. I’ll generally slot one of these in if I’m missing a piece. The last three treasures I’ll mention have synergies with other treasures or units but are not core to the build. But the primary trade off is that you sacrifice the scaling potential of Forking Rod if you are not directly replacing it. Obviously it is more difficult to get since it’s a level 6 treasure. Wand of Weirding allows you to do some really broken things by double casting more powerful spells in the late game. If you have these three treasures it is very easy to cast enough spells in a round to quickly outscale most boards.Īnother solid option is Wand of Weirding over Forking Rod. Generally the next piece of the puzzle is Forking Rod which doubles most spells you cast with Hat-Ball. These two allow you to cast a ridiculous amount of spells in a round with the only real limitation being how much gold you have to roll with and if you need to purchase units. Hat-Ball is composed of Merlin’s Hat, discounting your spells by 2 gold, and Crystal Ball, allowing you to replace a targeted spell with another spell in your shop. The primary combo required to even think about playing Mages is known in the community as Hat-Ball. We can’t really talk about Mages properly before we talk about the treasures that allow them to function. You can work around this with certain units, but the scaling you get is marginal in comparison to a fully fleshed out build.

The main reason this is not a meta build is that it is very difficult to get off the ground since it relies so heavily on treasures.

This can snowball very quickly and out scale most end game board states. In addition to the value any given spell gives you, the more spells you cast the stronger your board becomes. Mages have a unique play style that revolves around casting spells. But here we get to dive deep into this difficult but rewarding comp. I only briefly mentioned it as a niche build because it is difficult to assemble and heavily reliant on treasures. I had a lot of people tell me that I should have included Mages in my end game build guide. Today we are taking a comprehensive look at Mages.
